      Chau is no Jim Elliot

FoxNews online headline: "American Missionary wrote 'God, I don't want to die' before being killed by remote tribe" (11/22/2018)

      First sentence of the article:

"John Allen Chau, the American missionary who was killed by an isolated tribe on a remote Indian island, reportedly wrote in his journal hours before his death, 'God, I don't want to die.'"

On John Allen Chau's Instagram, he describes himself:

      "John Chau
      Following the Way.
      Wilderness EMT.
      PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.
      Outbound Collective Explorer.
      Perky Jerky Ambassador.
      Snakebite Survivor."

      What is "Following the Way"?

      Statement from this web page:

"Years ago, through prayer, study and observing the major faith traditions, I caught onto a pattern that I didn't know existed. I came to realize that the Shema of Judaism, the Great Commandment of Christianity, the Five Pillars of Islam, the Eightfold Path of Buddhism, and The Way of Taoism were common revelations of the same four essential truths. If this was true, I thought, then God must have reached out to us with this same message in every time, place, and culture to reveal to us the meaning of life's journey. What I have found since that time has astounded me."

Where do we find the "Confession of Faith" of this "Following the Way"? In the link above, you'll find a letter, a statement describing the beliefs, the link is:

John Allen Chau is NOT a new version of James Elliot, an evangelical Christian missionary killed in Ecuador 1956 by Huaorani people. It is sad that the young man lost his life, and I'll not judge his spiritual state, but there is nothing of the true gospel in this "Following the Way", in the online links. Missing are the idea of "sin", "cross", "blood", "faith in Christ as the only way". This group is a socialist, leftist perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ as Paul describes in 1 Cor. 15:1-7

It is a shame it happened - the law does not allow outsiders on that island
But in this case - are we to obey God or man?

Yes Salty, that brings up "And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." (Luk 9:5 RSV) and I suppose each of us can arrive at individual assessments of the situation. While Peter replied to the Jews that he must obey God not men, he was not addressing the Romans, but the first great oppressor of the Christians, Jews. It seems the history of the natives on that island had already made it clear they received no one, period, and made it clear previously in violent a manner. To me those people had already received the proverbial testimony against them shown by the outsider's shaking the dust from their feet.

I was a teenager when Jim Elliot and his friends were killed by the Auca's and I remember how stunned the 'modern' world was at that. The Christian community was really hit hard by this and it was on every person's mind. Here was a serious, dedicated missionary effort where 5 men gave their lives to spread the gospel. They felt they had gradually received friendship from the Auca's and so the attack came as a surprise, without warning. This was indeed sad about young Mr. Chau, but when I saw a comparison made to Jim Elliot in a news article online, I just could not let that pass without comment.

If you are going to obey God rather than man, you don't just show up with no real plan and shout things at them in English.
