Playing Church

Children like to play house; it’s not complicated.

One girl plays the part of mommy; a boy takes the role of daddy and others act as children in the family. The parents have varied duties; from cleaning house to preparing make believe meals and putting the children in bed for naps.

If mommy and daddy have jobs outside the home, they might pretend to leave for work. Children like to play games; they learn through role play. Some children play church.

That’s serious business. Someone steps into the role of pastor; another might lead the group as song leader. The rest are expected to sit still. Preacher’s kids are well suited for playing church. God’s children should never play church. We are the church, His people.

“To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:2 NASB).”

There’s no place for human pride; Jesus reigns.

Jesus leads us in and through the church.

“He is also the head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything (Colossians 1:18 NASB).”

Christ established the church.

“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it (Matthew 16:18 NASB).”

Will we be faithful to carry on His work? The gospel is shared in and through His church.
